2018 AIME I Problems and Answers

The 2018 AIME I was held on March 6, 2018. 2,458 students from US and Canadian schools participated in this contest. The AIME is taken by students who achieved a score in the top 5% (approximately) on the AMC 12, and students who achieve a score in the top 2.5% (approximately) on the AMC 10. We have 62 students this year who are qualified to take the AIME through the AMC 10 and the AMC 12.

untitledThis contest leads to the USAJMO, USAMO, MOSP (Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program) and the selection of the USA team sent to the 59th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), the premier international high school level problem solving contest. This year the IMO will be held in Cluj-Napoca – Romania, 3 – 14 July 2018.

logoThe AIME provides the exceptional students who are invited to take it with yet another opportunity to challenge their mathematical abilities. Like all examinations, it is a means towards furthering mathematical development and interest. The real value of the examination is in the learning that can come from the preparation beforehand and from further thought and discussion of the solutions.

The 2018 AIME I Problems and Answers have been posted below.

Our Uniqueness

We have a long history of close collaboration with the MAA‘s American Mathematics Competitions (AMC), which are dedicated to strengthening the mathematical capabilities of our nation’s youth, and are the first of a series of competitions in high school mathematics that determine the United States team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). There are many math competitions in the United States. Of those, only AMC → AIME → USAMO sequence would take you to the IMO (International Math Olympiad), the highest level math competition for high school students in the world.

We are only one in the Washington DC metropolitan area to offer elementary, middle, and high-school level competition math courses. Our students have received top scores and awards at prestigious national and math competitions. We have collected all AMC8/10/12 and AIME Official Problems and Official Solutions as shown in the article ” American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) Materials,” which have formed our “big data” system, a golden resource for our students, who are the ultimate beneficiaries.

Based on our intensive research and comparison of this year’s AMC 10A/12A problem sets with the problem sets of the last 18 years from 2000 to 2017, on Feb. 8, 2018, we predicted that this year’s AMC 10A/12A AIME Cutoff Scores would be:

  • AMC 10A: 110
  • AMC 12A: 93

On Feb. 16, 2018, we predicted that this year’s AMC 10B/12B AIME Cutoff Scores would be:

  • AMC 10A: 108
  • AMC 12A: 93

For more details, see

Please note that the cutoff 111 is completely the same as 110 because the score 110 is not attainable. However, if we look at

then we see that the score 111 was never an AMC 10 cutoff score before. Instead, the AMC office used 110 for the cutoff four times:

  • 2000 AMC 10
  • 2004 AMC 10A
  • 2016 AMC 10A
  • 2016 AMC 10B

This is why our team predicted that the score 110 should be an cutoff.

Our prediction for the 2018 AMC 10A, AMC 12A, and AMC 10B AIME Cutoff Scores came true!

Very surprisingly, this year’s official AMC 12B AIME cutoff 99 is higher than the AMC 12A AIME cutoff 93. However, this year’s AMC 12B was clearly harder than this year’s AMC 12A. Our prediction for the 2018 AMC 12A AIME cutoff was 93. We DO believe this is much more reasonable!

AMC 12A 8 10 18
AMC 12B 5 6 11
Total 35 38 73

11 middle schoolers and 2 elementary schoolers qualified for the AIME, which is geared toward high school students.

In addition, 61 young students in grade 8 or below scored at least 90 points and ranked among the top 10% of all test takers.  These students will receive the Certificate of Merit Award from the MAA/AMC.

We had an unusually large number of students this year qualifying through both the AMC 10 and AMC 12. Actually, four-fifths of our students qualified for the AIME. The other one-fifths of our students came extremely close to qualifying. All of their hard work has paid off!

The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are part of the United States of America Math Olympiad (USAMO). Students must score highly on these tests in order to take part in the AIME, and then the USAJMO/USAMO exam, which is used to choose members for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

We are very proud of our students’ great achievements and wish them well in the AIME and USAJMO/USAMO.

2018 AMC 10B/12B AIME Cutoff Scores

2018 AMC 10B-12B

According to our intensive research and comparison of this year’s AMC 10B/12B problem sets  with the problem sets of the last 18 years from 2000 to 2017, we predicted that this year’s AMC 10B/12B AIME Cutoff Scores would be:

  • AMC 10B: 108
  • AMC 12B: 93

The real AIME qualifying scores will be officially announced by the MAA/AMC around March 2, 2018.

Cutoff scores from 2000 to 2017 can be found at:

This year’s AMC 10B was more difficult than the this year’s AMC 10A. This year’s AMC 12B was harder than the this year’s AMC 12A mainly because there were fewer “deceptively hard” problems in the last five.

2018 AMC 12B Problems and Answers

_maa

The 2018 AMC 12B was held on February 15, 2018. At over 4,600 U.S. high schools in every state, more than 420,000 students were presented with a set of 25 questions rich in content, designed to make them think and sure to leave them talking.

Each year the AMC 10 and AMC 12 are on the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ Advisory List of Contests and Activities. Many top colleges also request AMC scores as part of the college application process. Both MIT and Caltech have entry blanks on their official admission application forms for the applicant to enter their best AMC and AIME scores. Ivy League Collegesand Stanford ask for to the AMC and AIME scores in their Supplement to the Common Application Forms. Your children deserve the chance to list these scores on their applicationsGood AMC scores will greatly enhance admission opportunities for students to elite colleges.

Mathematics is increasingly important in our technological and scientific age. Taking more mathematics in high school is the gateway to jobs and careers of all kinds, even those that are not explicitly mathematical, scientific, or technological. Participating in the AMC contests can challenge and inspire students to learn more mathematics!

Both MIT and Caltech have entry blanks on their official admission application forms for the applicant to enter their best AMC and AIME scores. Ivy League Collegesand Stanford ask for to the AMC and AIME scores in their Supplement to the Common Application Forms. Your children deserve the chance to list these scores on their applications! Good AMC scores will greatly enhance admission opportunities for students to elite colleges.

Mathematics is increasingly important in our technological and scientific age.
