In 2016, we have 36 students who are qualified to take AIME either through AMC 10A/12A or AMC 10B/12B. One of our students was among the 23 Perfect Scorers worldwide on the AMC 10A: Joel (Junyao) T. Particularly, seven middle schoolers and one elementary schooler qualified for the AIME, which is geared toward high school students. Intensive AIME Prep Course (Spring Session) Starting April 3

logo_aimeThis program has been carefully designed for the students with higher expectation for their American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) scores. While enriching their resume through the school classes, honing the test tricks, skills, and strategies for AIME becomes even more critical.

The AIME is used to determine qualification for the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO). There are many math competitions in the United States. Of those, only AMC → AIME → USAMO sequence would take you to the IMO (International Math Olympiad), the highest level math competition for high school students in the world.

This AIME course is aimed at those students with AMC 10/12 scores of 100+ to students who have scored around 4 on the AIME.

What?
This class will focus mostly on building strong basics in the five main pillars of Combinatorics, Number Theory, Geometry, Algebra, and Probability. The goal is for students to obtain the mental agility required to tackle these complex problems and hopefully get them within and past range of qualification for the USAMO and USAJMO, or around 9-12 problems on the AIME.

How?
Focus on basic concepts and essential knowledge before moving on developing the skills and intuition to find and pursue good lines of attack for complex problems.

  • 3 FREE mock tests that are intended to mimic an actual math competition exam, each of which has 15 questions similar to the AIME level taken from the licensed AMC Database. These simulated tests help students assess their level of preparation for the Math Competitions. After attempting the test, students get answers, explanations, and a detailed score report and wise performance summary.

Homework: At least 5 hours per week. Students are expected to complete all of the previous AIME contests in the past 10 years, which is over 60 hours of practice. Our instructors are open to questions on any previous AIMEs.

All problems from all of the previous 51 AIME contests (1983-2016) form our “big data” system. We have used data mining and predictive analytics to examine the types and the frequencies of questions in all these materials, and then completely “decoded” the AIME. We will show all the “secret code” cracked from the above big data to students, and teach them to totally grasp and “control” the AMC. For all questions on the recent AIME contests, we can find their “ancestors” and “roots” from the old AIME problems. Therefore, the best way to prepare for the contest is to practice by solving old AIME problems.

2016 AIME II Problems and Answers

The 2016 AIME II was held on March 16, 2016. 975 students from US and Canadian schools participated in this contest. The AIME is taken by students who achieved a score in the top 5% (approximately) on the AMC 12, and students who achieve a score of 120 or more (approximately the top 2.5%) on the AMC 10. This contest leads to the USAJMO, USAMO, MOSP (Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program) and the selection of the USA team sent to the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), the premier international high school level problem solving contest. This year the IMO will be held in Hong Kong, July 6–16, 2016.

The AIME provides the exceptional students who are invited to take it with yet another opportunity to challenge their mathematical abilities. Like all examinations, it is a means towards furthering mathematical development and interest. The real value of the examination is in the learning that can come from the preparation beforehand and from further thought and discussion of the solutions.

Homework assignments are a fundamental part of our courses

The only way to learn mathematics is by doing mathematics! Homework assignments are a fundamental part of a mathematics course. Homework is also seen as a welcome challenge and an opportunity for further learning. Homework given prior to a lesson can aid in understanding later during class. Homework also provides opportunities for reinforcement of the material learned in class.

Homework has the potential to be an extremely valuable part of students’ learning experience. We always create highly effective homework assignments and provide students and parents with the powerful tools necessary for the process to be as successful as possible. In addition, we also keep homework as fun and as stimulating as possible for the students. The weekly homework problem sets consist of three types of problems:

(1) A fast/mental calculation problem set: this will help students establish excellent basic calculation skills and fast problem-solving ability making all areas of math easier and quicker.

(2) A comprehensive problem set: this set consists of 25 questions at the AMC 8/MathCounts level taken from the licensed AMC Database. The set covers the following areas: Counting, Number Theory, Logic Reasoning, Probability, Statistics, Algebra, and Geometry.

(3) An especially designed problem set: this focuses on the topic presented in an immediately previous lesson, and provides students with the needed review and reinforcement about material learned in class.

do math newAmerica’s public school system has a major flaw: teachers grade homework for completion, rather than accuracy. They neglect to check their students’ daily progress through their homework, and lose the opportunity to correct their students’ mistakes.

Our teaching style is unique in that we adamantly believe in the importance of checking/correcting and reviewing our students’ homework.

By carefully examining our students’ homework, we can see how the students managed with the task set for homework, evaluate their progress, assess their current levels of academic engagement and performance, and identify their strengths and weaknesses. We give students another opportunity for learning, and they can learn from their mistakes and ensure that these mistakes will not be repeated.  Checked homework also provides a correct model for students to look back on when necessary. More importantly, based on students’ homework, we can provide them with timely individualized help.

Homework correction is especially important for 5th-8th graders because that period of time is critical to the development of students’ math skills! Students in the 5th-8th grade lack the ability to self-study competitive math, and they cannot self-critique their advanced math homework. Our homework correction service has greatly help those students at the 5th-8th grade levels gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental math concepts, build a solid foundation in math, and develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills, motivation, and perseverance for reaching their full potentials. All these things are not available through regular classes at school.

Description: Our curriculum focuses on advancing the mathematical skills of 5th-8th graders to prepare them for math competitions, such as Mathcounts, AMC 8, Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS), Math Kangaroo, and Math League. A variety of contest questions are used to teach students strategies to solve problems and help students prepare for the competitions. These problems stimulate their interest and enthusiasm for critical thinking and problem solving, broaden their mathematical intuition, and develop their brainpower. The topics taught in this class are not covered in regular school math classes, allowing our students to stay one step ahead.

We strongly believe in effort and the malleability of intelligence. Intelligence can be enhanced through effort. People can develop impressive levels of expertise through hard work and practice. In 2016, we have 36 students who are qualified to take AIME either through AMC 10A/12A or AMC 10B/12B. One of our students was among the 23 Perfect Scorers worldwide on the AMC 10A: Joel (Junyao) T. Particularly, seven middle schoolers and one elementary schooler qualified for the AIME, which is geared toward high school students. We have a long history of close collaboration with the MAA‘s American Mathematics Competitions (AMC), which are dedicated to strengthening the mathematical capabilities of our nation’s youth, and are the first of a series of competitions in high school mathematics that determine the United States team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

We are only one in the Washington DC metropolitan area to offer elementary, middle, and high-school level competition math courses. Our students have received top scores and awards at prestigious national and math competitions.

Small-sized Class Instruction Focused Model

Our tutoring model is very unique. We ask that all students complete all the required problems at home, and then email their work to us before come to the class. We will carefully review and check the students’ work. Based on their work, we can detect what are the student’s specific weaknesses and use those problems in class to teach the students all the tricks, shortcuts, strategies, and tactics for taking the contest. The entire class time is used for instructional tutoring/lecturing only. We firmly believe that learning is extremely important, and that a student should not waste time doing problems with our supervision if they can do those problems at home. So our 2-hour session is equivalent to a regular 4-hour session.

Getting a 5 on AP Calculus is not easy. But with hard work and our help, you will be able to do it. Almost all of our students scored 5 points on AP Calculus, and we know what it takes to get there.

The best way to prepare for the exam is definitely to practice past tests. We have a long history of close collaboration with the College Board, and have purchased 16 previous full-length official AP Calculus exam booklets (2000 to 2015) from the College Board. All these materials have become a golden resource for our students, who are the ultimate beneficiaries.

All problems from past official AP Calculus exams have formed our “big data” system. We have used data mining and predictive analytics to examine the types and the frequencies of questions in all these materials, and then completely “decoded” the AP Calculus. We always show all the “secret code” cracked from the above big data to students, and teach them to totally grasp and “control” the AP Calculus. In fact, for all questions on the recent AP Calculus exams, we can find their “ancestors” and “roots” from the old AP Calculus problems.

Our philosophy is extremely different from most experts in that we concentrate on test specific strategy that students have never seen in a traditional class setting. There are two separate exams for AP Calculus. Scoring a five on the AP Calculus AB exam allows high school students to obtain credit for a year of college level mathematics. Scoring a five on the AP Calculus BC exam allows students to be placed in a course in college that is one course beyond that granted for scoring a five on AP Calculus AB.

Realistically, it is possible to score very well on the AP Calculus BC exam even if one is only enrolled in AP Calculus AB. AP Calculus BC covers all the same topics covered in AP Calculus AB and adds several new concepts which can be learned with our guidance in a few weeks. Thus, it is possible to take the AP Calculus BC exam and score a five with only the completion of AP Calculus AB. We will definitely help you get a 5 on AP Calculus BC.

Students earning a score of 4 or 5 will generally earn college credit, satisfy “in-major” degree requirements, and receive advanced placement as follows:

  • AB Exam Score or AB Subscore of BC Exam: 1 semester credit for Calculus I
  • BC Exam Score: 1 semester credit for Calculus I, and 1 semester of credit for Calculus II

  • If you score at least a 4 on Calculus AB, you will get 4 credits for MATH140.
  • If you score at least a 4 on Calculus BC, you will get 8 credits for MATH140 and MATH141.

About the Exam

The exam is approximately three hours and 15 minutes long and has two parts — multiple choice and free response. Each section is worth 50% of the final exam grade.

Section I: Multiple Choice — 45 questions; 1 hour and 45 minutes

This section tests your proficiency on a wide variety of topics from the Calculus BC course details page.

  • Part A — 28 questions; 55 minutes (no calculator)
  • Part B — 17 questions; 50 minutes (graphing calculator permitted)

Total scores on the multiple-choice section are based on the number of questions answered correctly. Points are not deducted for incorrect answers and no points are awarded for unanswered questions.

Section II: Free Response — 6 questions; 1 hour and 30 minutes

  • Part A — 2 problems; 30 minutes (graphing calculator permitted)
  • Part B — 4 problems; 1 hour (no calculator)

The free response section tests your ability to solve problems using an extended chain of reasoning. During the second timed portion of the free-response section (Part B), you are permitted to continue work on problems in Part A, but you are not permitted to use a calculator during this time. 365-hour Project to Qualify for the AIME through the AMC 10/12 Contests

This is a project dedicated to helping students achieve high scores on the AMC 10/12 and qualify for the AIME. For one year, every student should spend one hour each day practicing for the AMC. If they can do this, they will definitely qualify for the AIME. Because both the AMC 10 and AMC 12 are “standardized” contests, it is extremely important for students to practice those previous AMC 10/12 problems. This is the only way to achieve a high score. From our extensive experiences, we know that a regular student who does not need to be a math prodigy is able to do very well on the AMC. Qualifying AIME

Although the 2016 AMC 10/12 contests have just finished, we must prepare in advance for the 2017 AMC 10/12 contests. As the great scientist Louis Pasteur said, “Chance favors only the prepared mind.” Those who strive to prepare early, and work hard are the ones who achieve the best results. We have collected 116 full-length real AMC 10/12 problems sets containing 2,960 problems, as described in the article “116 Full-length Real AMC Problems Sets are a Golden Resource to Our AMC 10/12 Prep Program.” Particularly, we have additional 3,000 brand new problems at the level of the AMC 10/12, taken from the licensed AMC Database. Even Albert Einstein must practice AMC problems to qualify for the AIME! Why? The AMC is unlike mc2. First, “standardized” contests are very different from pure research work. The “standardized” contest seeks standardized answers. We are actually testing standardization. That is to say, most standardized contests are designed to have students come up with the same existing, well-established answers. This is significantly different from research that is a creative activity based on a systematic approach to generate new ideas, principles, and theories, which form the basis of progress and development in different fields. Second, let us consider an interesting analogy: AMC 10/12 contests are to pure research as a 800-meter run track race is to a marathon. Both are challenging endeavors that take a lot of training and practice. The 800-meter race requires more speed, strategy, raw strength, and head-to-head competing, while the marathon is more about perseverance, endurance, patience, and diligence. If Albert Einstein does not practice for the 800-meter race, he will not be able to win despite being a genius at the marathon; similarly, if he does not practice AMC problems, he will not be able to answer all the questions within the time limit.

We have to face the simple truth that to do well on this grueling contest, we will need to practice. Just like it is for sports and music, the key to success is repetition and practice. We strongly believe in effort and the malleability of intelligence. Intelligence can be enhanced through effort. People can develop impressive levels of expertise through hard work and practice. Effort and persistence are the vehicles of achievement. Hard work always pays off. Practice makes perfect!

Weekly Homework: At least 5 hours per week. Each week, we will carefully review and check 2 students’ homework, and correct any mistakes. The next week, we will check another 2 students’ homework, and this will continue on a rotational basis until all students have had their homework checked at least once and the cycle will start again. From 2011 to 2015, in total, 37 students scored above 120 on the American Mathematics Contest 10 (AMC 10) and qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME); 26 students scored above 100 on the American Mathematics Contest 12 (AMC 12) and qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME); 3 students qualified for the USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO), the highest level of math competition for high school students in the USA. Our Uniqueness

We have a long history of close collaboration with the MAA‘s American Mathematics Competitions (AMC), which are dedicated to strengthening the mathematical capabilities of our nation’s youth, and are the first of a series of competitions in high school mathematics that determine the United States team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

We are only one in the Washington DC metropolitan area to offer elementary, middle, and high-school level competition math courses. Our students have received top scores and awards at prestigious national and math competitions. We have collected 116 full-length real AMC 10/12 problems sets containing 2,960 problems, as described in the article “116 Full-length Real AMC Problems Sets are a Golden Resource to Our AMC 10/12 Prep Program.” Particularly, we have extracted additional 3,000 brand new problems at the level of the AMC 10/12, from the licensed AMC Database. In addition, we have also collected all AMC8/10/12 and AIME Official Solutions as shown in the article “American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) Materials.” All these materials have formed a golden resource for our students, who are the ultimate beneficiaries.
